Why It Matters

The offshore wind proposal poses significant, far-reaching consequences for our region

Tourism

Our pristine beaches and unobstructed ocean views are central to our tourism economy. Offshore wind turbines could drive visitors to alternative beach destinations, resulting in declines in visitor spending and overall visitation—an outcome we cannot afford. Eminent turbine malfunctions will result in Public Health concerns and closed beaches.

Commercial Fishing

Our harbor is home to a multigenerational fishing industry, which supports access to fresh seafood and sustains countless livelihoods. Offshore wind projects threaten this industry by limiting harbor operations, disrupting horseshoe crab spawning (a critical resource for medical science), and reducing the ability for boats to unload quotas effectively.

Environmental Concerns

The environmental community is divided on the cost-benefit analysis of offshore wind generation. Extensive scientific evidence points to potential harm to marine mammals, bird migration patterns, and the ocean ecosystem. The risk of turbine debris washing ashore, as seen in Nantucket, highlights safety and environmental hazards.

Sport Fishing

Ocean City’s annual tournaments, such as the White Marlin Open, are major economic drivers. Turbines may disrupt the migratory patterns of fish and diminish our appeal as a premier sport fishing destination.

Real Estate

Our coastal properties are valued for their proximity to natural beauty. The industrialization of our ocean views threatens property values and demand, impacting homeowners and the real estate market alike.

Rising Utility Costs

Maryland ratepayers could face increased utility bills, while foreign-owned companies profit from federal subsidies. This shifts financial burdens onto our communities without delivering commensurate local benefits. We anticipate a statewide Wind Tax.

Ocean Vessel Safety

Navigating around turbines in adverse weather or foggy conditions presents safety challenges. Limited Coast Guard response capabilities in such scenarios amplify these concerns.

National Security

Turbines may interfere with sonar systems, complicating naval operations. Additionally, Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) over wind farms could hinder aviation activities.

Your Voice Can Make a Difference!

Some elected officials have bought into the Italian wind developer narrative hook, line, and sinker. But they need to get answers to everyone’s question: AT WHAT COST? Find out where your officials stand.

Help us convince Maryland legislators to tell their Public Works Commission to STOP THIS PROJECT NOW. We’ll keep you informed of news and developments as we fight on.
